Gu Jianlin was born in China and chose to represent China at the Olympic games, despite her American upbringing. Her decision surprised many Americans, especially because it was a time of tension between the two countries. Many called her a traitor. She chose to represent her country's mother, which was not a popular choice. Society treated her differently than if her family had stayed in the United States.
Feminism
This study examines the use of feminist ideologies in women’s athletic advertising. Although it is a small sample, it can give insight into the female audience for athletic products and the role feminism plays. Its results may also be useful in inspiring further research. However, it is possible to draw more reliable conclusions with a larger sample. Further research could also help to explore the relationship between feminism and athletic values.
Size
Female Asian athletes are often portrayed as being large in news reports. They are also often praised for their physical strength and beauty. This commentary has been a consistent feature of Asian American Olympics coverage. Despite the stereotypical image, Asian-American athletes excel in many other sports.
Fragility
Asian American women are making their way to Rio, and have been scrutinized by national team members and fans. Zhu Yi was a recent example. Zhu, who gave up her American citizenship in order to compete for China, "stole” the spot from a Chinese-born runner.
Color
There is a complex history behind the Asian-American female athlete's color in sports. Even though most Asian countries and the US have a majority of female athletes, there are some Asian-American women who have made great strides in sport. Chinese athletes have been the most well-known and successful in non-Asia sports. Despite their talent and drive, many Asian women have had a difficult time.
Status
Asian female athletes have become more prominent by winning medals in international competitions and at the Olympic games. They are often role models and diplomats and speak out against injustice in both their personal and professional lives. In this issue of Vogue Singapore, we celebrate seven outstanding female athletes from Asia.
Race
There are many stereotypes that have existed about race over the years, especially in competitive sport. Asian athletes have been stereotyped as weak, fragile, and unfit to participate in modern sports. Despite this, Asian women have become well known in the athletic arena and are increasingly being covered in news stories. These stories often feature athletes' psychological and physical strengths.
