Gu Jianlin was born in China and chose to represent China at the Olympic games, despite her American upbringing. The decision was surprising to many Americans, particularly as it was during a period of tension between these two countries. Some even called her a traitor. She chose to represent her country's mother, which was not a popular choice. Society treated her differently than if her family had stayed in the United States.
Feminism
This study aims to explore the prevalence of feminist ideologies in women's athletic advertising. Although the sample is very small, it may provide insight about the female athlete audience and the role that feminism plays in marketing athletic products. Its results may also be useful in inspiring further research. However, larger samples might lead to more solid conclusions. Additional research could help us understand the relationship of feminism to athletic values.
Size
News reports about the size of female Asian athletes often focus on their physical strength and beauty. This commentary has been a consistent feature of Asian American Olympics coverage. Despite being stereotyped, Asian-American athletes excel at many other sports.
Fragility
Asian American women have been making their way to the Olympics, and they've been scrutinized by fans and the national team. Zhu Yi, a Chinese-born athlete who fell during the team event, is one recent example. Zhu, who was born in China, gave up her American citizenship so she could compete for China.
Color
Sports have a complicated history. Although most Asian and American female athletes are white, there have been some Asian women who have achieved greatness through sports. Chinese athletes have been the most well-known and successful in non-Asia sports. But there are also several Asian women who have been unlucky, despite their extraordinary talent and drive.
Status
Asian female athletes are becoming more visible and prominent, winning medals at international competitions and Olympic games. They are role models, diplomats, and often speak out against injustice in their personal and professional lives. We are proud to present seven Asian female athletes in this issue of Vogue Singapore.
Race
There are many stereotypes that have existed about race over the years, especially in competitive sport. Particularly, Asian athletes were portrayed as weak, fragile, and biologically inept for modern sports. Despite these stereotypes, Asian women are now well-known in the sporting arena and are often featured in news stories. Many stories focus on psychological characteristics and physical strength of the athletes.
