Equal Pay for Women's Football

According to a recent Seton Hall Sports Poll sponsored the Sharkey Institute & the Stillman School of Business 91% of women believe that women should get equal pay for playing football, while 74% of men disagree. The same goes for professional sports. Only 59 percent agree with this sentiment, but 79 percent of women think equal pay should be the norm. This is a good start, but there's still a lot to do before it becomes a reality.

Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock and female sports stars demanded equal pay during the U.S. Female's World Cup. They aren't the only women who play sports; many men also are underpaid. The US Women's National Team won the Best Team Award at the 2018 Women's World Cup. Bullock presented this award to the team. Alex Morgan, the Best Female Athlete winner, represents the team.

The United States Women's National Soccer Team took center stage at the 2019 ESPY Awards, where Bullock presented the Best Team Award to the team led by Megan Rapinoe, the Golden Boot Award winner of the FIFA Women's World Cup. It is still a long road before the United States women’s soccer national team earns equal pay as its male counterparts. While equal pay for women's soccer in the United States is a goal that should be pursued, there are steps that can still be taken. According to Cherita Ellens (CEO of Women Employed), women currently make 80 cents for each dollar earned by a man. Ellens admits that this gap is still significant, but she is confident that the women's group will eventually get equal pay for equal effort. Ellens is hopeful that the players will join her in making this dream a reality.

Equal pay is subjective. If the men's team won 2015's World Cup, then the women's team should also have won it. However, this doesn't mean that the women's team shouldn't be rewarded as equally as the men's. Women's team players have been competing for more games than the men's team. To keep up, they have had to work harder. The World Cups' prize money has been the same. Not all players are called up to every camp. What factors into who plays where? Injury, coaching decisions, and how many games each side plays are all important.

U.S. Soccer

Equal pay for men and women in soccer has reached a historic agreement between the USSF and soccer unions. This agreement guarantees that both sides receive equal pay and share in the prize money earned at World Cups. It also provides that men as well as women will receive equal payments at non World Cup tournaments. Both men and women can earn the same amount abroad and at home, provided they play the exact same number of games.

Cone, who was a former member of the women's national team, stated in September that he would not sign any contract with any team offering less prize money. The deal was reached Tuesday and the women’s union expressed support. The negotiations were being monitored by lawyers from the men's association. The women's player association congratulated their victory against gender discrimination. The leaders of women's soccer's players' unions stated they would continue to hold U.S. Soccer for its decision.

The prize money is where there is the greatest pay gap in soccer. The prize money is the biggest pay gap in soccer. Men's teams compete to win nearly $440 millions at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Women compete for only $30 million. Five female soccer stars have sued to demand equal pay. They claim that their wages are fourfold lower than those of their male counterparts. Equal pay for women playing soccer is long overdue. It is still a problem.

There are many causes for the disparity in women's and men's salaries. Historically, women have had to compete against men to make ends meet. The differences in compensation are significant. The USSF has never been transparent with its employees about their salaries. This is especially true for women on its staff. This explains the recent PR blitz. A USSF spokesperson stated to Reuters that the organization is committed to equal pay for all its players.
