The US soccer history is filled with overly ambitious owners and poor investments. There have also been aging players. Although the NASL was created in the 1960s and operated like a major league but with fewer attendances, it wasn't as successful. Indoor soccer began to take over in the 1970s. The MISL folded in 1992 but its legacy lives on in the current American soccer pyramid.

Major League Soccer

Major League Soccer is a relatively new American sport. It was founded in 1996. It had 10 teams. Later, it was split into two conferences: Eastern or Western. It took several decades before the sport became popular. Now, it is one the most popular sports in America with over 300 teams participating in this league.

Soccer was first played in America in the late 1800s. Because of the Great Depression, soccer exploded in popularity. In the 1920s, the American Soccer League was founded. Its foundation teams were drawn from cities. As the game became more mainstream, the US began to host more World Cups. Today, the US has more fans than any country on earth. Here's a quick history of US Soccer.

U.S. Men’s National Team

The U.S. National Team Men's has participated in many major international tournaments. The most notable was the 1994 FIFA Under-17 World Cup win. In 2002, they went on winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup. They beat Canada in overtime at Pasadena's Rose Bowl in August 1994. It was the first game in which the United States had defeated Canada. This set a new record in U.S. soccer history.

Women's National Team

In 1987, the women’s team was created and began playing competitive international soccer. The team played several games in Italy but had mixed results. They lost three games to Denmark, while drawing one. The team's greatest win came in a game against the Soviet Union, which the US won 8-0. However, the team didn't enjoy a long-lasting success.
